SECOND RESPONSE

Barbarian or barbarism is epithet. Not even a nation calls itself barbarian. All nations denominate their enemies or other nations as barbarian. However in the history we see some nations (which are denominated as barbarian) established perfect military system or social system. In the world, there are lots of nations and millions of people. They speak different languages, they believe in different gods or they have different cultureres. These differences create a unity and it is our world. However people underestimate this unity and categorized people. In the text we see this categorization very openly. Las Casas and Sepulveda’s discussion about this distinction is a good example of this categorization. Las Casas says that all nations are mainly same and we can not discriminate people.Sepulveda’s ideas are much like racist. He sees indies as uneducated and uncivilized. However Casas says these epithets must anathematize.According to Casas, Indies are not uncivilized or uneducated. He thinks that every nation has its own culture and education style. He also insists that the nations which are not christians named as barbarian but he knows that it is nonsense. Sepulveda justifies Spanish and he says Spanish’ s attitudes towards indies are right because he thinks they should be educated. As a summary , Casas believes that there are different kind of people who believe in different religious, talk different languages and be educated by different cultures. However Sepulveda has certain prejudices about “Others”.He is not able to see the differences of people. He tries to put certain borders between nations and puts each of them on different steps. According to Sepulveda such nations like indies are at the bottom and they must be there always. They should be slaves of strongest one. This is their fate.

Nietzsche said; “ Man is the cruelest animal.” When I read “The Devastation of the Indies: A Brief Account” , Nietzsche ‘s expression became more meaningful and than I realized that since the first day of the world; the most powerful one dominates the weakest one; It is the main and bitter rule of the world.
As we see in the text Indies were pure and optimist. After they were invaded by Christians ; They accepted them as their friend and their teacher. They had no desires to worldly things. However Christians were hypocrite, greedy. The way They treat was so cruel. They raped women, they took infants from their mother and snatching people by legs and arms.. On page six we see how their cruelty was unlimited After threwing babies heads to river, they say: “ Boil there, you offspring of the devil”. They lighted innocent people while they were still alive. They deceived them and exploited them. This was genocide. Almost two millions indies were killed monstrously.
Also under the name of “ Christianity” they also benefited from indies’ pure emotions. Indiens were open to doctrine and very apt to receive holy world of Christianity. Ofcourse it was trick.
Both their islands and their individualities were exploited. They never wanted them. They were happy before they came their lands. And they never forgot their humanity unlike spanish christians.
